"I then went to Munich, studied architecture there like I did in Dresden, just for show, since my parents were against painting."

This brief sentence from a letter Kirchner wrote to Botho Graef in 1916 reflects his professional training, a small part of a much larger story of his development and the influences that shaped him into the avant-garde painter he became. For Kirchner, the architecture studies seem to have been little more than a necessary constraint, leaving no major mark on his artistic evolution. However, many of his architectural sketches from his student years and his final thesis are still preserved today.

The exhibition highlights this lesser-known side of the artist, bringing Kirchner’s architectural perspective to the forefront through his designs and sketches.
